Similarities with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)

Note: By posting this topic I don't mean to imply that people suffering from Internet/TV Addiction necessarily suffer from ADD, and vice-versa.

Attention

"Typically, when people with ADD try to concentrate there is decreased activity (rather than the expected increase) in the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain that helps with sustained attention, forethought, and impulse control.  The brain betrays the ADD person.  Stimulants work [in some cases] by preventing prefrontal cortex shutdown, so a person has more access to his own brain to help him focus and settle down."

Self-Stimulating Behaviors

Negative Thinking

"Another self-stimulating behavior common in people with ADD is worrying or focusing on problems.  The emotional turmoil generated by worrying or being upset produces stress chemicals that keep the brain active."

"The problem with using anger, emotional turmoil and negative emotion as a way to stimulate yourself is that it ruins your immune system.  The high levels of adrenaline produced by conflict driven behavior decreases the immune system’s effectiveness [adrenal fatigue], increasing vulnerability to illness.  I have seen this scenario over and over."

Types

Overfocused ADD

"Overfocused ADD – primary ADD symptoms plus cognitive inflexibility, trouble shifting attention, stuck on negative thoughts or behaviors, worrying, holds grudges, argumentative, oppositional, trouble with change, need for sameness.  SPECT shows increased activity in the anterior cingulate gyrus (the brain’s gear shifter) and prefrontal cortex.  Often seen in families with addiction problems or obsessive-compulsive tendencies.  Stimulants, by themselves, usually make this type worse, people become more focused on the things that bother them.  Effectively treated with Effexor, or a combination of an SSRI, like Prozac, and a stimulant, aerobic exercise is also helpful, and a higher carbohydrate diet."

DDAT Exercise Program

"A unique way of treating people with learning disabilities has come to Boston.

NewsCenter 5's Heather Unruh reported that the Dore Achievement Center in Wellesley offers an exercise-based program [DDAT exercise program] used by more than 10,000 kids in the United Kingdom.

While 10-year-old Kevin Colford kick boxes, brother Brian bounces and John stretches with his eyes closed. It is simple, but targeted exercises designed to stimulate an under functioning part of their brain."
